Average 12-week internship accelerates career trajectory by 5 years
“I felt it could offer a great springboard for my career.”

Changing lives
Since 2007, the Saltire Scholar Program has placed over 1,750 interns worldwide. During this time, Scotland’s entrepreneurial ecosystem has continued to evolve and grow across all industries.

Sabrina Merahi
2023 / Cyber Ark / Boston
I’ve finally been able to process just how life-changing this summer has been and can bid farewell to my internship at CyberArk🇺🇸. My internship surrounded an industry and type of work I was initially unfamiliar with. However, the team at the Newton office welcomed me into the realm of HR at an identity security company with open arms – acting as mentors and supporting me through various projects. A special thanks goes to Megan Wehrstedt for putting her full faith in me within this role – from the interview stages, right up until now – she has acted as a huge pillar of support during my time in Boston, and for that I’m eternally grateful!
My time in Boston wouldn’t have been complete without the incredible people I met along the way. My fellow Saltire Scholar Interns whom I travelled with, lived with, and had the pleasure of experiencing ‘Boston life’ with – have made this experience unforgettable. Friendships for life have formed within our group.
It’s also been wonderful meeting US based interns within CyberArk, and other companies around the city – exchanging cultural and professional differences (and similarities) between Scotland and America.
I’d like to share my appreciation for Entrepreneurial Scotland, Saltire Programs, and all the people behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to make these internships a reality. Without such wonderful organizations, I doubt I would have had this amazing opportunity within reach, and crossed paths with all the incredible people along the way.

Isla Jamieson
2023 / Rally Bio / Connecticut
The saltire scholarship program has given me opportunities beyond my imagination. I am so thankful for the experiences I gained as a result of my internship in Connecticut.
My main takeaway from this program is to really grab every opportunity by the reins. I will never forget signing up for my assessment center slot, expecting nothing to come of it and then a few months later getting the call from Saltire telling me I had secured my top choice of internship at a biotech firm in Connecticut.
Besides giving me the chance to explore a totally new country – one which I likely would not have had the chance to visit if not for the program – my Saltire Scholars internship has helped me gain the confidence I needed to ask more questions, take more chances and shoot for the moon.

“Saltire provided me with a boost of confidence to seek out as many opportunities.”
Lasting impact
Our program is the catalyst for continued success as our interns move from studies into the early stages of their careers. We keep an eye on our alumni and their achievements; it’s a testament to the strength of our program and the talent they possess.

Scott Grant
2016 – Saltire Intern, Commercial & Finance Intern, Indie Semiconductor, California
2024 – Finance Director, Indie Semiconductor, London
“The enthusiasm I felt upon discovering the opportunity at Indie Semiconductor was the same joy you feel when you come home to find the food you were thinking about all day – I was so happy. As soon as I read about the role, I knew I was going for it and was going to do everything I could to secure the internship. Securing that role back in 2016 changed my life.
After graduating, I had offers and opportunities from graduate schemes, but they just didn’t appeal to me. Before I had finished university at the end of 2017, the CFO and CEO of Indie Semiconductor asked what my plans were, I had stayed in contact post internship. I really wanted to push myself, and to build on the opportunity I had been afforded as an Intern, so I returned to Indie.
This sequence of events was all made possible because I chose to join the Saltire Intern Program. It reflects a critical decision that has significantly shaped my professional career trajectory. It has put me where I am today, and I will always remember that.
I credit the program for its influential, priceless, and life-changing impact on my career. I don’t know if I could have achieved the same outcome without the program. I remain deeply grateful for the transformative experiences and opportunities it has provided me. And I want to note the support provided by the Entrepreneurial Scotland team, every step of the way, exceeds all expectations, they work round the clock to make everything frictionless – for scholars and host companies.
I know I have been incredibly lucky in benefiting from the Saltire Scholar Internship Program. That’s why I’m so glad that Indie continues to support the next generation of talent, investing in the future and opening opportunities for people.
I don’t know any other program that comes close to what Saltire is doing and I hope it will help bring Scotland into the forefront of industries worldwide in years to come.”

Nina Spencer
2009 – Saltire Intern, Wood Group, Houston, Texas
2024 – Vice President Onward Inc. Houston, Texas
“Interning in Houston had such a lasting impact on me that I now find myself not only living in Houston but hosting Saltire interns of my own.
In 2009 I interned at Wood for 3 months. Not only did it give me a look into corporate America, the energy sector, assist me with my dissertation topic, confirm the area of work I wanted to pursue, but over a decade on it continues to open me up to opportunities I would otherwise not have had access to.
The prestige of the Saltire program gave me an edge with future employers and the hands-on experience I gained allowed me to demonstrate skills many of my peers could not. The contacts I made during my internship, I still have and use, to this day.
15 years on, Houston is now my home base and I have the incredible opportunity to host Saltire Interns of my own. Why wouldn’t I? I know first-hand the rigorous candidate process and the quality of intern the program produces. It changed my life and now I have the chance to positively impact others. In doing so, I have gained access to some of the brightest young talent Scotland produces to support my business needs and execute specific projects at a higher standard than I could have by outsourcing them. I would urge anyone looking to access high quality talent to consider the Saltire Intern program.”
“The Saltire Intern Program has been invaluable for Unanet for the past four years. Each scholar has had an interest in corporate strategy, finance, and mergers and acquisitions and reported directly to our Chief Strategy Officer. We designed an internship program that consisted of learning basic skills for a role in strategy, meeting other leaders in the business, and 1-2 capstone projects.”

the Saltire Foundation
We rely on the incredible support from our host organizations, many of whom we work with year after year. There is a direct link between our program’s success and the invaluable support they provide to interns throughout the duration of their roles.

Miles & Stockbridge
Each year Miles & Stockbridge is delighted to welcome our Saltire Intern to our Washington, D.C. office for the summer. We were one of the first organizations in the US to welcome an Intern back in 2008. Each year we have had a brilliant Scottish law student bring new ideas, new views and new energy to our firm.
Each summer, our Scots law saltire intern works in our litigation department in our D.C. office. From day one they are part of our team and work on all aspects of our litigation practice. We specialize in international law, family law, defamation law, and federal work throughout the United States with our intern getting exposure to work in the District of Columbia, the State of Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. It’s important to us to provide a holistic experience for our intern so we regularly, as a team, do away days to iconic US locations such as Mount Vernon, Fort McHenry and other historical venues.
Our Intern is part of our larger summer program with American law students who join us for the summer too. The international dynamic, where they can learn from and about each other, adds an incredibly valuable dimension to our support for the next generation of lawyers.
We look forward to welcoming the next generation of Scots law leaders in 2025 and beyond.

The White House Historical Association
The White House Historical Association looks forward to partnering each year with Entrepreneurial Scotland and the Saltire Foundation USA to welcome summer interns. Over the last few years, we have benefitted from extraordinary Saltire Interns to support our mission.
From conducting research to assisting with events and projects, we have benefited from the exceptional talent that Scotland produces while also allowing these students to further their own development in a real-world, fast-paced working environment. Saltire Interns at the White House Historical Association have the unique opportunity to spend their summers in Washington, DC, just across the street from the White House, where they hone their research skills and contribute to our work. All of our Saltire Interns over the years have embraced the Association’s nonpartisan values and have been a tremendous help to us in promoting our mission.
The support offered by the Saltire Foundation team makes the entire recruitment process easy to navigate, ensuring that we secure the right type of candidates year to year. I look forward to continuing our successful partnership in the future and would encourage anyone looking to access high quality talent to consider this incredible program.

Unanet
The Saltire Intern Program has been invaluable for Unanet for the past four years. Each scholar has had an interest in corporate strategy, finance, and mergers & acquisitions and reported directly to our Chief Strategy Officer. We designed an internship program that consisted of learning basic skills for a role in strategy, meeting other leaders in the business, and 1-2 capstone projects.
Some examples of capstone projects that we found very valuable and continue to use today are:
• A market map of potential acquisition targets divided by key market, e.g. GovCon, Architecture/Engineering, and Construction
• A database housing key information on each acquisition target
• A predictive forecast model for Sales bookings which analyzed past conversion rates and used statistical measures to predict the current quarter’s Sales
• Analyzing the list price versus the actual price for our customers, identifying those paying under and over the list price
Each intern had a strong desire to learn, a great work ethic, and a strong ability to demonstrate critical thinking. We plan on continuing to source our intern needs through the Saltire program in the future.
